About Middle Claydon

This genteel place is famous for the great house that has connections with Florence Nightingale. The lands surrounding Claydon House came into possession of the Verney family in the 15th-century and the 16th-century Manor was enlarged and refurbished to a grand scale by the 2nd Earl of Verney in about 1750. It was work that was to take nearly 30 years.

The house contains superb, elegantly furnished, rococo state rooms, a chinese room that contains many precious artefacts and, upstairs there is a magnificent gothic room that has a beautifully carved ceiling. In the north hall there is a splendid staircase that has a carved wooden ceiling.

Parthenhope, Lady Verney, was the sister of Forence Nightingale who often visited Claydon House, when she quite possibly enjoyed strolling in the magnificent grounds and wonderful gardens. The bedroom used by Florence Nightingale is on view.

Apart from the great house Middle Claydon has many interesting features and is well worth a visit.
